For most B2B SaaS companies, ChatGPT ads aren't worth a big budget yet. Ads only show to people on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise users never see them, and that's where many of your buyers work. Early B2B results reported so far are thin, and the costs reported for the platform are high.

A small test can still make sense if you sell to small businesses or individuals, have conversion tracking in place and can spare a few weeks of budget. If you advertise there already, check one setting before 29 October 2026: OpenAI will switch on AI-rewritten ads for every campaign unless you opt out.

I lead search and AI visibility at Fourward. We don't sell ChatGPT ads. OpenAI's own pages were read on 22 October 2026, and every figure from trade press is marked as reported.

What OpenAI launched, and when

OpenAI started testing ads in February 2026 with logged-in adults in the US on the Free and Go plans. Over the year it added more markets, including Europe in August and Southeast Asia and Taiwan in September.

On 21 October 2026 OpenAI added 26 more countries, bringing the total to 89. The new markets include 14 more Latin American countries, plus Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. OpenAI also said:

  • More than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week.
  • Over 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since ads launched.
  • Next it plans more formats, buying options and measurement.

The 100,000 figure counts every advertiser so far, not how many are active now.

How ChatGPT ads work

  • Placement: labeled ads appear below ChatGPT's answer and are matched to the conversation.
  • Who sees them: only Free and Go users. OpenAI says Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free.
  • Targeting: instead of keywords, advertisers describe the conversations their ad fits. Search Engine Journal reports that ads can also use past chats and past ad clicks, which users can turn off.
  • Privacy: OpenAI says advertisers don't see conversations, it doesn't sell user data, and ads don't influence answers.
  • Exclusions: no ads for users under 18 and none next to health, mental health or political topics, as reported at launch.
  • Buying: through the self-serve Ads Manager, technology partners or OpenAI's own team.

What ChatGPT ads cost

OpenAI doesn't publish prices. What's known comes from trade press, and it has changed fast:

Measured's Terence Einhorn told Modern Retail in October that cost per click runs about six times Google's for the brands he's seen, and that many conversions weren't incremental.

Why B2B SaaS should be careful

Three things make ChatGPT ads harder for B2B than for consumer brands:

  1. Work accounts are ad-free. OpenAI keeps ads off Plus, Pro and Enterprise. If your buyers use ChatGPT through a company plan, they won't see your ad. Your reach skews to people using the free plan.
  2. Results so far are thin. Agency Workshop Digital reported a B2B test with about 700 clicks and no qualified leads. Other agencies have published better numbers, but these are single case studies, not benchmarks.
  3. Measurement is young. Conversion tracking exists, but long B2B sales cycles make it hard to tie a click in ChatGPT to a closed deal months later.
Key takeaway

The buyers you most want, people researching tools at work, are the ones least likely to see a ChatGPT ad today.

When a test makes sense

  • You sell to small businesses, freelancers or individuals, who are more likely to use the free plan.
  • You have a low-cost or self-serve plan, so a click can turn into a sign-up the same day.
  • You track sign-ups and pipeline properly, so you can compare the test with Google and LinkedIn.
  • You can spend a few weeks of budget without needing it to pay back straight away.

If none of these fit, wait until OpenAI adds the formats, objectives and measurement it says are coming.

How to run a small test

  1. Set up conversion tracking first. Without it, you'll only see clicks.
  2. Describe conversations, not keywords. For example: people comparing project management tools for a small agency.
  3. Send clicks to a matching page. A comparison or use-case page usually fits a ChatGPT conversation better than your homepage.
  4. Decide on creative enhancements. See the next section.
  5. Judge it on pipeline. Compare cost per qualified lead with Google, not cost per click.

The 29 October deadline: creative enhancements

OpenAI's help page says creative enhancements will switch on for new and existing campaigns from Thursday, 29 October 2026. When on, ChatGPT can:

  • rewrite your headlines and descriptions to fit the conversation;
  • translate your ad text;
  • resize your images;
  • change the page your ad links to.

Enhanced versions can run without you reviewing each one, and there's no preview of every variation. You can opt out before 29 October, or change it at any time, under Manage settings in Ads Manager. Existing opt-outs are kept.

For B2B SaaS, I'd opt out at the account level until you've seen what it writes. A rewritten claim about pricing, security or compliance is a real risk.

The free alternative: get named in the answer

An ad sits below ChatGPT's answer. The answer itself is free, and OpenAI says ads don't change it. When a buyer asks ChatGPT for the best tools in your category, being named in that answer reaches every user, on every plan, at no cost per click.

That takes crawler access, clear pages and mentions on the sites AI cites. Our GEO guide for B2B SaaS covers the steps, and Google is moving the same way: its October update to AI Mode links puts more source links into answers.

FAQs

Are ChatGPT ads worth it for B2B SaaS?

For most B2B SaaS companies, not yet. Ads only reach Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise users never see them. Reported B2B results are thin and reported costs are high. A small test can make sense for products sold to small businesses with a self-serve sign-up.

Which ChatGPT users see ads?

Logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI says Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions stay ad-free.

In which countries are ChatGPT ads available?

89 countries as of 21 October 2026, including the US, UK, Canada, India, much of Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

OpenAI doesn't publish prices. Trade press reported about a $60 CPM at launch, falling to around $25 by spring 2026. Self-serve buying now has no fixed commitment and supports cost-per-click bidding.

What are creative enhancements in ChatGPT ads?

A setting that lets ChatGPT rewrite headlines and descriptions, translate text, resize images and change the landing URL to fit each conversation. It switches on for all campaigns from 29 October 2026 unless you opt out in Ads Manager.

Do ads affect ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says no. Ads are labeled, shown separately from the answer, and advertisers can't see conversations.
